Week 7 Posting - Hypervisors
Hypervisors are devices that enable other devices or applications to run, imagine a opensource old game that cannot run on any modern OS, one will need to purchase a older device that the software and hardware to run that single game. Now imagine having a system that only has the parts needed for that game to run and put it all in a box, this is the power of virtualization. Virtualization also relies on already running software and hardware depending on the version. If a system is created to function as a purely virtual machines type 1 would be the best. Type 1 hypervisor runs directly on the hardware whereas the type 2 run on top of an already installed OS. It is all about what it will be used for. Server admins like using virtualization due to how efficient the hardware can be. Imagine managing 20 servers and all the equipment and time needed to manage them, now imagine that it is all in one or two servers still functioning as well as it did when separated. This will reduce cost and enable a easier to manage and easier to secure environment. In my personal experience I have used VMWare ESXi and workstation for my home network router and firewall on ESXi and windows XP on my VMWare and any resources that I need locally. Hypervisors are attainable on multiple platforms, MacOS, Linux, bare metal and Windows.
